The fine particulate matter, which is the stuff that gets deep into your lungs and causes coughing and wheezing and worse, was higher than any other time since the DEQ started monitoring the air in 1985. Before 2020, Portland had never experienced air quality measuring higher than unhealthy. But in 2020, there were three very unhealthy days and five hazardous days. And what is usually the hottest and smokiest time of the year is yet to come late August into early September.

The dreaded snowflake has started to appear on many Oregonians phones as the weather turns legitimately cold for the first time this winter.  The chill isn t anything noteworthy, with temperatures only dropping into the low 30s in the Willamette Valley over the coming week, but that does bring the potential for low-elevation snow, triggering the aforementioned snowflake on your iPhone.  In general, say meteorologists, snow in the valleys is unlikely over the weekend, but appears possible Monday and Tuesday, and then multiple times over next week.
