Plan To Lower Detroit Reservoir By 5 Feet | Z100 Portland

Mar 16, 2021 Portland District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers considers a plan to reduce Detroit Reservoir s maximum pool elevation by five feet beginning this summer to reduce the likelihood of overstressing the spillway gates during a large earthquake, which might impact boat ramp access in some years. Portland District invites members of the public to join a virtual informational briefing via WebEx Monday, March 22, 2021 from 5-7 p.m. on a plan to restrict Detroit Dam s maximum pool elevation to 1558.5 feet (from 1563.5 feet) in order to reduce the life-safety risk associated with large seismic events. In 2020, the District completed a seismic hazard analysis for Detroit Dam. The hazard study found the risk to be higher than Corps officials previously thought. Structural analysis has shown a possibility of the spillway gates buckling under the force of a full reservoir during a large earthquake. Spotlight on Port of Alaska dredging February 15, 2021, by Zlatan Hrvacevic With 55 days until the 75th anniversary of the Corps Alaska District, USACE is looking at a project that they have been working on for a long time – dredging the Port of Alaska. Through the years, various dredges have worked to keep the waterway clear because underwater shoals in Cook Inlet cause settlement to settle in the harbor and prevent ships from safely navigating. A notable visit to Cook Inlet was the Essayons dredge in 2013. Operated by the Portland District, the vessel dredged 2.8 million cubic yards in 35 days. It would take 280,000 dump trucks to hold the amount of sand that was dredged.
