state department documents turned up on a website called wikileaks. details were also published in newspapers around the world who had been given advanced copies of the documents by wikileaks. the documents included secret communications on dozens of sensitive issues, and also suggested that the secretary of state was pressing some u.s. diplomats to engage in spy activities, including background checks on fellow diplomats and even retina scans while they were in the united states. jennifer griffin is with us as we await the secretary of state. reporter: it s not just the secretary of state but the secretary of defense and the president who have yet to comment on this wikileaks document dump which has been the talk of the town here in washington. of the most explosive cables were about half a dozen sent between 2008 and 2009 in which the u.s. secretary of state essentially asks diplomats to spy on behalf of the department. here is one of them in particular. it says, national
