Whatcom County officials were trying to determine what caused a northbound BNSF Railway train carrying crude oil to derail Tuesday morning in the Custer area, sparking a huge fire that prompted an evacuation for nearby residents in the vicinity, authorities said.
The incident occurred around 11:40 a.m. in the Custer area near the 7500 block of Portal Way, and officials closed Grandview Road at Portal Way and Main Street. Motorists were urged to avoid the area as crews worked to clean up the site and upright the train cars. BELLINGHAM, Wash. Last month, Whatcom Deputies caught two burglary suspects after witnesses reported someone was dragging a sparking object behind a vehicle on Portal Way in Ferndale.
Authorities have since discovered nearly $19,000 in stolen goods in storage units linked to one of those suspects, 35-year-old Tyler Davidson, as well as 27-year-old Crystal Wilson of Blaine.
Deputies found a motorcycle and close to 100 tools stolen from a local home improvement store.
The Sheriff’s Department says all items have been returned to their rightful owner.
Deputies also discovered a handgun in one of Davidson’s storage units, which, with 19 prior felony convictions, he is not allowed to possess.
