The pursuit of Porsche’s 20
th overall win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans begins in 2023. Confirmation comes weeks after sister brand Audi announced its return with the same new class, Le Mans Daytona h, which conforms to regulations that allow for racing in IMSA’s WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Porsche’s last Le Mans victory, earned in 2017 with the 1000-hp LMP1 919 Hybrid, served as the German brand’s farewell from prototype action. Among the fastest sports cars ever made, Porsche struggled to reconcile the 919’s jaw-dropping performance with the nine-figure budgets it devoured while playing on the world stage.

The 992-generation GT3-Cup, which replaces the outgoing post-facelift 991 model debuted in 2016, is a clear performance upgrade over its predecessor. The car retains a naturally aspirated 4.0 liter flat six, but maximum performance now comes at 8,400 RPM (up from 7,500) and output is up to 510 horsepower (up from 485 in the previous generation and 460 in the pre-facelift 991-era GT3 Cup that came before it).
