Mexico’s Pemex Scraps Zama Offshore Oil Appraisal Well as Wrangling Over Operatorship Continues
Mexico’s state oil company Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) has jettisoned plans to drill an appraisal well delineating the Zama shallow water oil deposit, which straddles one block operated by Pemex and another operated by Talos Energy Inc.
The decision was revealed Tuesday during a session of upstream regulator Comisión Nacional de Hidrocarburos (CNH).
CNH approved a modification of Pemex’s exploration plan for the block, which included scrapping the Asab-1 well.
Asab-1 had been meant to delineate how much of Zama, which a Talos-led consortium discovered in 2017, was located within the Pemex block.
North American Energy Integration Promotes Efficiency, Higher Standards of Living, Says Yergin
Mexico, the United States and Canada have benefitted from the energy integration of North America through greater energy security and improved standards of living, according to IHS Markit Vice Chairman Daniel Yergin.
Speaking Tuesday at the La Convención Nacional Petrolera virtual conference organized by Mexican oil and gas association Asociación Mexicana de Empresas de Hidrocarburos (Amexhi), Yergin highlighted U.S. natural gas exports as an example of energy integration’s benefits.
U.S. natural gas exports to Mexico generate cheap and reliable electricity for the country that then “goes into industrial production that goes back to the United States,” he said.
