The costume king - behind the Jersey Boys curtain with Paul Smith

Broadway singer Hayden Milanés plays Frankie Valli in the New Zealand production of Jersey Boys. Speaking from one of the costume rooms in Wellington’s grand old dame of theatres, the Opera House, Smith looks quite at home. Surrounded by wigs, shoes and costumes of various descriptions he is in his element. His professional life is a curious mix of roles - wardrobe manager, corporate finance foot soldier, high performance netball umpire (he stands at a whopping 1.9 metres). But theatre has always been the place he feels happiest, he says. As touring wardrobe manager for Jersey Boys, he’s also just glad to have a gig in an industry that is on its knees abroad.

Commemorative landscaped park planned for set-to-be-vacant Marines Hall lot in Tītahi Bay

Porirua City Council was granted resource consent to demolish the US Marines Hall, Tītahi Bay in February. The wrecking ball may be at the ready, but plans are afoot to replace the soon-to-be-vacant US Marines Hall site in Tītahi Bay with a commemorative park. A mural, lantern boxes and fruit trees are among the features being considered for the landscaped park, which must be built within a year of the wrecking ball striking the dilapidated structure. With an architect already engaged to bring the park proposal to life, Porirua Mayor Anita Baker is hopeful any plan will acknowledge the history of the site, and can be enjoyed by future generations.
