as the hours go by, it will become cheer, i don t know when our reporting is at the motel. a transformer fire? a transformer fire. is it just that? or is there more to it? we ll to have wait for more information. the way you described on it twitter, it was a loud boom? yeah. it was a popping noise. it didn t sound like an explosion and i m no expert but it didn t sound like anything that was in any way intentional. it sounded like a transformer going. something happening. and then everything went out. was it fairly frightening? or it was just one week after fourth of july. we re used to hearing pops. it was closer to a balloon
i just heard a popping noise , it sounded like a transformer popping, and immediately after that the lights went out, the air conditioner went out, everything , the building just went black. you know, it s kind of scary we re in our hotel on the 42nd floor and all of the power went out and then we just had to go down and use our phones to go downstairs. i was working at starbucks and everything went pitch black and i went running outside and just yelled out, the refrigerator is out, and then everybody started yelling and all of the lights went out. jon: well the lights are back on now, but new yorkers still have plenty to say about last nights massive blackout. the outage stopped subways, shut down theaters and left tens of thousands of people in the dark. jacqui heinrich was out in the thick of it and she joins us with an update.
screaming than we did, heard some sounds that we thought maybe it was a gunshot. we didn t know for sure but we didn t want to take a chance. but i m glad it s not that situation. could you guys even hear the actual noise? i heard some kind of popping noise but very faint, very faint popping noise. and so you guys what were you hearing from other people? were people shouting things? all we saw was the wave of people. just like because we were back here, we were back here. all we saw was a wave of people coming in this direction. it was very scary. i saw a lot of people running. i was sitting down on the ground. i wasn t in this area, we was back over there. and i just saw this mass of people running. i said to myself and my daughter who i m with, we cannot run with the crowd, do not panic. we was near the barrier. stop running. you re going to get people really, really hurt. so i saw a police officer a little while after that and she said that they was actually
that we had one of the box vans that there was a chemical decomp zi zigs. chemical reaction that resulted in a fire at that location. there were a number of small containers inside the box van that did represent tour. we heard some popping noise coming from that area. then, gray smoke and then followed by a fire. it is my understanding that three of the this is one of three of the containers that they had lost refrigeration on. and so we can expect similar type of decomp zigs in those other trailers, maybe all nine before it s over with. so we so far, what has happened is exactly what we e expected was going to happen. we re holding our perimeter, law enforcement partners are holding that perimeter and at this time sheriff if you want to take any
protected to the best we can. this morning, as expected, were all of the research that was done by myself and others, we found out that we had one of the vans of that there was a chemical decomposition a chemical reaction that resulted in a fire at that location, there were a number of small containers inside that s it did a rupture. we heard some popping noise coming from that area, then gray smoke, followed by fire. excuse me. it is my understanding that three this is 1 of 3 of the containers that they had lost refrigeration on. and so we can expect a similar type of decomposition in those other trailers, maybe even all nine of them before it is over with.
