Cardinal Claudio Gugerotti, former Vatican envoy in Ukraine and head of the Dicastery for Eastern Churches, has called the war in Ukraine “barbaric,” and has defended Pope Francis’s attempt at a balanced engagement with both sides of the conflict.
Speaking to journalists during a Sept. 29 press point ahead of Saturday’s consistory, Cardinal Stephen Ameyu Martin Mulla, who has been Archbishop of Juba since 2020, said he feels unworthy of his appointment, which “put us in the spotlight.”
“To be a cardinal is not just a title, but also a responsibility, to be a voice from Jerusalem, of Jerusalem, about our situation,” said Cardinal-Designate Pierbattista Pizzaballa.
Cardinal-designate Stephen Chow of Hong Kong, who will receive his red hat from Pope Francis Saturday, has voiced his belief that the Vatican’s approach to dialogue with China is working, and that perceptions it is naïve are wrong.
