Virtual Talk: The Discovery and Preservation of Two Ancient Canoes Found in Lake Mendota

The Friends of Pope Farm Conservancy is excited to welcome Dr. Amy Rosebrough, archeologist at the Wisconsin State Historical Society, for a special VIRTUAL talk on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. about the recent discoveries of two ancient canoes in Lake Mendota. Thousands of years ago, dugout canoes fashioned by Native American craft workers vanished under the waters of Lake Mendota. In 2021 and 2022, they were raised to the light of day again by divers and volunteers with the Wisconsin Historical Society, in partnership with Wisconsin’s Native Nations.

Fall Migration Birding Tour at Pope Farm Conservancy

Join birding expert Mike McDowell on an early morning hike through Pope Farm Conservancy to observe the behavior of birds who are preparing for or already in the process of migrating south. Along the tour, Mike will share tips and techniques for identifying and observing these birds who stop here for much needed food and rest during their long journey south. Pope Farm Conservancy is part of a more extensive area that has important habitat for wildlife. The conservancy's agricultural crops, prairies, and different vegetative areas create a great diversity in food source and habitat.

Calling All Birders: Join local birding expert Mike McDowell on an exciting early morning avian adventure through Pope Farm Conservancy on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at 7:30 a.m. We typically see and hear dozens of different birds of the conservancy, including bluebirds, indigo buntings, eastern wood-pewees, wild turkeys, great crested flycatchers, and more! Mike will offer techniques to help you enjoy identifying and observing birds in their preferred habitats. This is a great way to start the day and meet other local birders. You might even see a few birds to add to your life list!
