The Madras High Court on Friday stayed the operation of an order passed by the Centre on December 12, 2020, appointing former Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan as an Expert Member of the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The interim stay was granted after it was reported to the court that she had planned to take charge on April 19.

CHENNAI: Former Tamil Nadu chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan has been appointed as an expert member of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Southern Zone in Chennai. An office order in this regard was issued by the Principal Bench of NGT on April 5. The serving expert member in the Southern Bench Saibal Dasgupta has been sent to Eastern Zonal Bench in Kolkata.

PIL against her appointment pending at Madras High Court Former Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan has been appointed Expert Member in the Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal in Chennai.
Former Additional Chief Secretary and Commissioner of Revenue Administration K. Satyagopal has been appointed as Expert Member in the Western Zone Bench at Pune.
A PIL had been filed against the appointment of Ms. Vaidyanathan by Poovulagin Nanbargal at the Madras High Court, which is pending. The NGO said the appointment was violated the guideline that stipulated five years experience in the field of environment or in related organisations.

The final year students of the Department of Social Sciences, Lady Doak College, released a documentary film ‘Uzhathiyar,’ a film about women working on agricultural fields, here on Monday as part of International Women’s Day celebration.
The film was released by G. Sundararajan from Poovulagin Nanbargal, a movement focusing on the environment, in the presence of Principal Christianna Singh through a virtual platform. The students said they were inspired by the works of agri-journalist P. Sainath, who documented about the women farmers in India. The students produced the documentary film based on the lives of women farmers of Thiruvirunthalpuram village of Virudhunagar district.
