Welshpool s famous war memorial marks centenary

The landmark is being celebrated by the Memorial of Welshpool project. A spokesman said: “Sited by the steep flight of steps from Church Street to St. Mary’s Church (an entrance created in the 1770s), The War Memorial was built to a design of Sir Aston Webb, a former president of the Royal Academy, at a cost of £864, and dedicated in 1921. “It is built in the style of a mercat-cross, with statues appearing in the tabernacle work above. These statues are said to be the four old saints of ancient Powis, but their names do not appear to have been recorded on any document relating to this memorial.

Storm Christoph: Warning after drivers rescued from flood water

Two drivers have been rescued from their lorries after getting stuck in flood water near Welshpool and Llanymynech. On Thursday morning, a heavy goods vehicle driver was rescued in the Llanymynech area by fire and rescue crews from Aberystwyth, Llanfyllin and Welshpool. Crews were then called to rescue another lorry driver at Pool Quay, near Welshpool at around 12.30pm on Thursday. In the past 24 hours, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service responded to 10 flooding incidents. A senior Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service manager has urged drivers not to drive through floodwater, saying that it is just not worth the risk .

Storm Christoph in Powys: 11 30am update

A host of road closures are in place across Powys as the county deals with effects of Storm Christoph. Powys County Council and Traffic Wales have confirmed the A483 between Welshpool and Newtown is closed this morning, and the same road is also closed in both directions between Four Crosses and Llanymynech. The A483 is also closed in both directions in Builth Wells. In Machynlleth the A487 Dyfi Bridge is closed in both directions, and the Derwen Las road is also closed. Flooding in the Meifod area by County Times Camera Club member Nita Ashworth Natural Resources Wales say there are flood alerts in place for the following areas;
