KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 24 The Retail and Trade Brands Advocacy Malaysia Chapter (RTBA Malaysia) has called on the government to cut tobacco taxes to curb the black market of illicit cigarettes, as suggested by Member of Parliament for Pontian Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan in the Dewan Rakyat recently.
Managing director Datuk Fazli Nordin said the core factor driving the illegal cigarette trade was the wide price gap between legal and illegal products, resulting in the current critical level of illicit cigarettes in the country.
“There are international and local studies that support this (claim),” he said in a statement today.
