poland for a minute. this is something that often politicians don t understand. it is something that americans sometimes don t quite grasp because politicians aren t walking them through it. you take a country like poland who over the past five, six years or so have had policies that we have found to be anti-democratic or illiberal. there s been a back and forth with the judiciary, and yet we have maintained a strong relationship with poland despite everything else. here you have on the other side of all of that, you have the pols doing extraordinary things, welcoming the 82nd airborne in. ambassador brzezinski says that
checkpoint. there have been many buses, cabs coming in throughout the day. let me show you the rest of the scene here, jake, if i can. there s people kind of lining up trying to figure out what they re going to do here. some people are, again, trying to find a ride. they re trying to link up with a bus. they re hearing things about maybe there s a bus going warsaw, maybe they re going to another town. other people are trying to get to warsaw so they can catch a flight somewhere else. there is exchange shops here, a little restaurant here, a hotel back there that you re not going to find a room at. so people are struggling to find a place to live. pols are also preparing for this. in the towns that we came through on the way to the border, you saw very, very long lines, some 20, 30 cars long, because they re stocking up on fuel because they simply don t know what s going to happen. for people who are wondering why didn t these ukrainians leave earlier, we should remember and remind ou
nato. these troops will not be going to ukraine, won t be facing off with russia and they will also be providing the possibility of support for any refugees that could come across the border from ukraine if there is some sort of wide-scale evasion. the pols have said they are preparing, starting to pick those sites. look, the 82nd airborne as part of the nato mountain national forces are used to dealing and working alongside polish troops. we were at a base today, and can you see it happening, communications, things going in. you could see the force there, and it s something that we ve seen here. the troops have 80,000 troops across europe, and they are starting to shuffle them around as the threat in ukraine continues to loom. poland is very cognizant of russia s history with eastern europe. is there a concern in poland that this situation could very rapidly affect them directly? yes. i think it s a wait and see attitude right now.
we i ran into some lithuanians, and some pols as well. people from all over the world. yes, sir. but one mission. yes, coming together to train for saber strike 22 in order to strengthen the alliance and to show that we are always ready. reporter: i also spoke with brigadier general joseph hillberth who commands the training operation here who brought up the fact that the only time that nato s article 5 has actually been called into action in the history of the alliance was for the u.s. in the days after 9/11. he says it s part of the obligation allies have to each other for the u.s. to be here on the ground helping to make sure that our allies have what they need to defend this territory with secretary of state antony blinken also in the baltics today, nato is defensive, it s not intending aggression toward any country, doesn t want
