Lake District chef to compete in Great British Menu A Lake District chef will appear on the BBC’s Great British Menu next week. Dan McGeorge, head chef at Ambleside’s Rothay Manor, is one of four chefs representing the North West of England in the regional heats, which start on May 5. Dan, 30, will be battling it out for a place in finals week against Kirk Howarth, of Plates, London, Dave Critchley, of Lu Ban, Liverpool and Ashwani Rangta, of Gupshup, Altrincham. The latest series of Great British Menu, on BBC Two at 8pm, started last month. Three episodes are shown each week for eight weeks, covering each regional heat before finals week, culminating in a banquet.

Rothay Manor in Ambleside makes it mark on Michelin map Rothay Manor has been recognised by the prestigious Michelin organisation. The Ambleside hotel has been awarded a Michelin Plate for the first time for its kitchen, led by head chef Dan McGeorge. The Michelin Plate was unveiled in 2018 for noteworthy restaurants well worth keeping an eye on but are not quite ready to earn a Bib Gourmand or a Michelin star. Dan said: ‘’It still hasn’t sunk in. This shows we are definitely heading in the right direction. “There’s lots more to come, despite the fact that it’s been a very difficult period for every aspect of the hospitality industry we can’t wait to get back into the kitchen and do what we do best, and this recognition just makes us want to get in there even more and create great food for our customers.’’
