Scientists in Hornsund, Svalbard witnessed a bear pursue and kill a reindeer before taking it ashore and devouring it. Footage of the incident was posted on social media platforms and news. There have been 13 reports of polar bears preying on reindeer on the same archipelago between 1983 and 1999.

As sea ice melts earlier in the year due to climate change, polar bears have begun their hunt for food on land, like bird eggs. They are not too good at it, a recent drone-based study shows. That could be another bad sign for the ability of bears to survive in a changing world, researchers say.
