Embodied carbon and fire safety to be bolted onto architecture curriculum

Architecture students will have to learn about climate science and embodied carbon, as well as fire safety, procurement routes and ethics, under proposals put out for consultation by the ARB
The architects’ regulator has unveiled new guidance which significantly expands the existing provisions for sustainability and fire and life safety in the architecture curriculum – with universities being told they should teach a range of subjects relating to the topics for the first time.

The extensive list of subjects (
see below) include the importance of promoting regenerative design and sharing building performance data as well as, in the wake of the Grenfell tragedy, the science of fire and smoke spread and the health and safety effects of poor design decisions.

Fourth building in scheme was designed by AHMM
Hertfordshire contractor HG Construction has been appointed to the next phase of Argent Related’s Tottenham Hale development.
The pair has started construction on the fourth residential building at the development.
North Island was designed by AHMM
The North Island building, which was designed by AHMM, will deliver 136 new homes, including 80 shared ownership and 56 market sale.
There is 3,000ft
2 of planned commercial space on the ground floor with flexible use for a cafe, restaurants and shops.
The construction of the North Island building is part of Argent Related’s Tottenham Hale regeneration scheme which will create a new neighbourhood including more than 1,000 homes, 15 retail spaces, co-working and office space.

A team of 35 residents have been working with Redbridge Council to shape a new community hub for Seven Kings.
The Seven Kings Hub Design Group consists of residents who were independently selected as representatives. They are helping shape proposals for how it should be run and plans for the interior.

The plans include a new library and GP services for Seven Kings, Newbury, Mayfield, Goodmayes and Chadwell, as well as 236 new homes in the High Road, opposite Chester Road and Pembroke Road.

Built on the site of the Raymond Revue Bar in Soho, this theatre is the first phase of Walker Court, a 55,000ft² mixed-use scheme. The theatre is designed to provide a cultural anchor point and reinforce the district’s role as the focus for the capital’s theatreland. The brief from Notting Hill Genesis called for a high-density scheme with a range of house types from one-bedroom extra-care flats to three-bedroom mews homes with rooftop terraces. The result is a new mixed-use neighbourhood in Chelmsford with 600 homes alongside cafes, restaurants, public realm, workplaces and community facilities. Located on a former university campus, it features five new residential buildings, including a 14-storey tower, four new public squares,
