This is a huge crowd, coming out this evening, to talk about the subject of considerable interest and controversy, namely citizenship in the United States. From the beginning of the republic, there has been a problem. How do you form, how do we form a citizenry out of such a diverse of diverse and eclectic mix . This is important, at least our framers believed it was because their understanding was in a republic, as opposed to a other regime, it was responsible essential that citizens voluntarily out of their own passion and patriotism be committed to a much thicker understanding of the common good than is necessary in the other regimes. It is both more necessary and more difficult. And then we were lacking some things these older regimes would have that had been unifying citizen forming institutions. We did not have a monarch around whom we would rally. We were not going to have a unified established church. We were not goi
Our society had trouble with in recent years. That makes us wonder how strong our institutions will prove to be, how we will rise to a challenge like this. You cant help but see it as a time of crisis but because it is the time of testing it is also time to think about what americas strengths are, what we are good at and how we can build on that to address the enormous problems we confront. Our country has always tried to strike a balance between the dignity and the quality of the individual on the one hand and some form of strength of community on the other. Every free Society Faces that. Our society has in the past century emphasized the individual, emphasize liberty, emphasize freedom and diversity and that has brought some enormous advantages and benefits but there is another side to that coin and the other side look Like Division and fragmentation and isolation, it can look like alienation and loneliness and
