AI helping radiologists read x-rays and detect cancer – dpa international

Some forms of artificial intelligence (AI) could help radiologists detect lung cancer, according to a team of South Korean doctors and academics. In findings published in Radiology, a journal of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), on June 27, the Seoul-based researchers said an AI algorithm ”with high diagnostic accuracy improved radiologist performance in detecting lung cancers on chest x-rays and increased human acceptance of AI suggestions.” The Seoul National University team ahd radiologists assess 120 chest x-rays and then repeated the process with the radiologists checking the images in tandem with two AI systems. "Our study suggests that AI can help radiologists, but only when the AI’s diagnostic performance meets or exceeds that of the human reader," said Chang Min Park of the university’s Department of Radiology and Institute of Radiation Medicine.
