today, what can you tell us about today s opioid event in new hampshire? yeah. very, very important idea to get up there. i mean, this is something that is ravaging, just hammering states all over the country. not just the beautiful state of new hampshire. you may remember back on the 1st of this month they had that very important policy push at the white house talking about opioids. jeff sessions, the attorney general was there. one of the headlines, of course, that will garner a great deal of attention today, sandra, is this. as as far as the president s new opioid plan it says the department of justice will seek the death penalty against drug traffickers where appropriate under current law. that according to the white house fact sheet. here is the white house press secretary sarah sanders. we can tell you some of the things we have done particularly with the president s budget where it included $10 billion for hhs to combat the opioid epidemic by preventing opioid abuse and help
i want my schools protect ed just like my banks are protected. we must immediately harden the schools. we need to harden them and not soften them up. we drop off the kids at schools of so-called gun-free zones that are wide open targets for any crazy madman bent on evil to come there first. a gun-free zone to a killer or somebody who wants to be a killer, that is like going in for the ice cream. that is like, here i am, take me. so we saw that the president did conduct a listening session with the victims, but realistically, and not just the president, but the republicans, paul ryan and mitch mcconnell, and can they separate themselves from the nra when it comes to the policy push? they k and i think it would be smart for donald trump to do so even though they have heavily funded his presidential bid, he
everything, you re taking away their constitutional expression of free speech. bret: we hear what the president says. but behind the scenes what is the president thinking? is there a thinking about a policy push? one advised me that this is theoretically a nixon-to-china opportunity. the nra supports him, he could actually go there. but i don t think trump wants to go to china. this is an issue where he actually instinctively understands. he said it in speeches, he says, common court bad, second amendment good. he s seen it on the campaign trail, he understands it. and there was nobody who supported him more strongly during the campaign than the nra. i don t see trump acting against the nra s interests on this issue. bret: here s the president on making schools safer. later this month, i will be meeting with the nation s
republican and democratic administrations have made a series of decisions that have effectively allowed for much more immigration then was supposed to be allowed under the law of the united states. as part of this, they look at temporary protected statuses and say look, they call them temporary, they go on for a very long time. the difference in haiti is this earthquake is much more recent than the stuff the statuses that existed for central america, had gone on much longer. i think here as rick notes, the argument that haiti is ready to take these people back i think is a very difficult argument to make and these are people with a strong case of why they need a continuation of their temporary protected status. i think it s part of a broader policy push on their part just trying to find every way that they can to reject these sorts of, you know, unusual immigration statuses. it does reflect a hard line. that s a perception problem that you think the white house would be aware of. 1
threat from north korea. again, this was the big head line coming in. you had the president standing in front of the national assembly in seoul, very directly delivering a message to kim jong-un himself. delivering a message to the people of north korea. and this is actually a message that the president has reiterated at almost every photo opportunity and every news conference that i ve been at here on this trip where he said he s referenced that speech, he s redelivered lines from that speech essentially. he wants to keep it at the forefront. he wants people to be talking about it. because i think this is a real policy push for the administration on this trip. gordon, do you think that message got through? certainly has gotten through south japan and korea where there have been receptive audience. the issue going forward is how much pressure the united states is going to put on china and russia. so this is more an american issue than issue in moscow and beijing. the ish a will get
