The culture warriors at News Corp have long had their sights set on chipping away at the ABC’s credibility. They view the national broadcaster, in mainly free-market competitive terms, as an impediment to the accumulation of even more power and money for their proprietor. To see the foreign-owned media company’s attack on the national broadcaster as anything more sophisticated than a puerile attempt to increase market share would be to give it too much credit. But as with all Murdoch-related ventures, there are casualties.
