Online child abuse is a national threat say police as reports rise by nearly 6% Online child abuse has been desribed as a national threat by police after figures showed a rise in the cyber crime during the last year.  A total of 1,966 online child sex abuse crimes were logged by Police Scotland during 2020-21, a rise of nearly 6% on the previous year and nearly 25% greater than the five-year average. The force’s performance report notes that 434 children were identified and safeguarded by officers hunting online child abusers during the period between September and March, with 277 people arrested. The rise in online crimes “underlines the need for policing in Scotland to build capacity and capability in the virtual space”, said Deputy Chief Constable Fiona Taylor.

Ayrshire crime stats: Serious assaults down but fraud and online child sex abuse up

Figures from Police Scotland s quarterly review show that serious assault and willful fire-raising incidents have come down in the last year, but Ayrshire s top cop says virtual crimes, such as fraud and online child sexual abuse have gone up. Ayrshire has recorded almost 50 fewer crimes of fire-raising and more than 60 fewer crimes of serious assault against the same reporting period last year. The figures also show that there were 161 more drink, drug driving offences and an increase in incidents involving weapons carrying – up from 103 to 129. Fraud cases are up from 547 to 809 against the same period while there were 22 fewer crimes of common assaults on emergency workers.

POLICE have reported a sharp surge in incidents of public nuisance, neighbourhood disputes and noise complaints during the pandemic. The force revealed that incidents of public nuisance more than doubled year-on-year over the period between April and December (up from 56,936 to 123,979 or 117.8 per cent). Neighbour disputes also jumped (rising from 16,021 to 22,930 or 43.1 per cent), while noise complaints were up 18.5 per cent (rising from 43,288 to 51,277).
