DOJ ready to place witnesses in Tarlac shooting under WPP

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra (TOTO LOZANO / PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) At the moment, Guevarra said no requests have been made yet seeking protection as witnesses in the killing of Sonia Gregorio, 53, and her son Frank Anthony, 25.     “But if the witnesses need protection, they may apply directly with the DOJ WPP and we shall evaluate their application for provisional coverage immediately,” he assured. Sonia and Frank were shot dead by Police Staff Sgt. Sergeant Jonel Nuezca during an altercation in their neighborhood in Barangay Cabayaosan in Paniqui, Tarlac at around 4:30 p.m. last Sunday, Dec. 21.      Nuezca was subjected to inquest proceedings before the Tarlac Provincial Prosecutor’s Office following his surrender at the Rosales Municipal Police Station in Pangasinan at around 6:20 p.m. that Sunday.

Lawyers group anticipates more arrests vs red-tagged activists

(MANILA BULLETIN) The National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) said in a statement that “it received raw reports that police are supposedly poised to embark on another series of arbitrary arrests in the dead of the night premised on the implementation of predesigned search warrants for ambulant firearms and explosives based on tall tales of dubious ‘informants’.”   Maintaining that the civil society network of its clients is in no way connect to the armed communist movement or gun running syndicate, the NUPL warned law enforcement who will be implementing the search warrants against planting evidence.   “The NUPL maintains that such sham practices by law enforcement agents of the state are totally incompatible with a free and democratic society,” the group stated.

Solon to push regular mental health checks for law enforcers

I will draft a bill to that effect when we resume (sessions),” Lopez, chairman of the Committee on Metro Manila Development, said Wednesday. This was in reaction to the shocking double-murder last Sunday in Tarlac wherein the suspect was 46-year-old Police Senior Master Sergeant Jonel Nuezca. Nuezca has since surrendered to authorities. “Definitely, he has mental imbalance and (it shows) there is a mandatory need for neuro and psycho tests for all law enforcers,” the congressman said of the killer cop.
