SARASOTA – City Manager Marlon Brown named Capt. James Rieser chief of police just three days after former chief Bernadette DiPino suddenly resigned amid turmoil over comments she made about a homeless man.
The low-profile choice for chief is one of the agency’s four captains and one of the highest-ranking officers after Deputy Chief of Police Pat Robinson accepted the interim deputy city manager role with the city in December.
Rieser supervises the support services division and oversees property and evidence, records, management information systems, fleet, the red light camera program, school crossing guards, extra duty, facilities and maintenance, planning and research, and special events.
