Monday, May 24, 2021 - 6:05 am State Sen. Joe Griffo wants police officers included under hate crime protections, and wants it to be a felony to be within 25 feet of a police officer doing their job if a civilian refuses an order to move. Griffo, R-Rome, and members of the Senate Republican Conference unveiled a package of legislation the senator’s office says is “to protect and honor law enforcement throughout the state.” A news release from Griffo cites a recent State of Safety in America report. The report appears on Safewise.com, a website that appears geared toward selling home security systems.

NY Senate GOP Outline Extensive Pro-Police Legislative Package

In all, the Senate GOP unveiled a dozen bills, with the highlights of each listed below. Among them, a bill making it a crime to publicly release private, identifying information of a police or peace officer with the intent to threaten or intimidate that officer, simply because of their status in law enforcement. Another bill would classify crimes committed against police officers a hate crime, if that crime is committed simply because of they are a police officer.  Included is legislation creating May 15 as Police Memorial Day in New York State, and the creation of a $500,000 benefit package for officers who are seriously injured or killed in the line of duty.

Date Time Ceremony marks one year anniversary Victoria Police will today pause and pay tribute to four fallen colleagues at a ceremony to mark the first anniversary since the officers were tragically killed in a road incident on Melbourne’s Eastern Freeway. Families, friends and colleagues will come together at the Victoria Police Academy chapel to remember the lives of Leading Senior Constable Lynette Taylor, Senior Constable Kevin King, Constable Josh Prestney and Constable Glen Humphris who were killed in the line of duty on 22 April 2020. The service will include the laying of four wreaths for each police officer killed and a one-minute silence.
