It was only a couple of days ago when Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha declared that “Pol Lt Gen Surachate Hakparn, who was removed as Immigration Bureau commissioner in 2019, is being reinstated to an active post at the Royal Thai Police…”. But, he’s back.
The reason for Big Joke – his nickname – suddenly going from hero to villain “
was never explained and remains a mystery.” Some time ago, The Nation had a summary of some of the events.
In 2020 Surachate “filed a lawsuit against Gen Prayut last year claiming he had been transferred illegally.” He was said to be “under investigation.” On Tuesday, Gen Prayuth said “the investigation … remained inconclusive,” but was continuing.

The Police Commission on Friday approved a new position at headquarters, amid speculation that it will be filled by Surachate Hakparn, who is poised to return after two years of mysterious exile from law enforcement.
The advisory position, equal in rank to an assistant police chief post, was approved a week after Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha signed an order to transfer Pol Lt Gen Surachate, better known as “Big Joke”, from the Prime Minister’s Office to the Royal Thai Police Office.
After hearing powerful first-hand accounts of Los Angeles police officers rescuing children from sex traffickers, the Police Commission on Tuesday called on the City Council to protect the LAPD’s anti-trafficking efforts against budget cuts.
“Anything less, in my opinion, is an abdication of our responsibility as a city,” said William Briggs, the commission’s vice president, during the panel’s weekly virtual meeting.
Briggs said he was angered by the fact that children are bought, sold and raped in L.A., and riled by claims in some corners that police who work such cases aren’t worthy of robust funding and prioritization.
Statement of Alderwoman Chantia Lewis December 19, 2020 By Ald. Chantia Lewis - Dec 19th, 2020 01:26 pm
The move by the Fire and Police Commission on Thursday to name Assistant Chief
Jeffrey Norman as the next acting chief of the Milwaukee Police Department (effective December 23rd) has my full and enthusiastic support.
Appointed Acting Chief Norman has been a bright light on MPD’s Command Staff for many years, and when he was part of the initial group of chief candidates I was pleased to see him there, and he was my pick from the beginning.
I share the same views of support that have already been expressed (yesterday) for appointed Acting Chief Norman by my colleagues, Alderman
