(Natural News) A resident of Farmington Hills, Michigan filed a federal lawsuit after he was arrested based on facial recognition technology. Attorneys representing Robert Williams filed the suit on April 13 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The 75-page lawsuit seeks an undisclosed amount in damages for “the grave harm caused by the misuse of – and reliance upon – facial recognition technology.”
The lawsuit says Williams’s Fourth Amendment rights were violated. In addition, it said his arrest in January 2020 violated the Michigan Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race. Police Chief James Craig on Monday plans to announce his retirement as head of the city s police department and possibly discuss his future plans, which could include a run for political office.

Craig, who was scheduled to speak at a news conference, has had the longest tenure of any recent Detroit police chief. The Detroit native was hired in 2013 by an emergency manager after the state assumed control of the financially broken city .
The city has yet to identify an interim police chief, but Duggan said he is working with the Board of Police Commissioners to fill the position until they find a permanent successor for Craig. The board is then responsible to find and interview candidates who will be turned over to the mayor for a final decision, which is subject for approval by the city council.
Craig said the interim chief will be most likely be an internal choice and if Duggan chooses an interim chief before his June 1 departure, then the two will collaborate to smooth the transition.
While Craig highlighted Project Greenlight and the Real Time Crime Center as career accomplishments, he leaves the department while crime is high. Craig pointed to a backlog in courts and obstacles beyond his control in the prosecution process as part of the problem.
