Village of Whitesboro police chief Jason Buley remembered

There are not many photographs of Jason Buley. The 46-year-old Holland Patent resident and village of Whitesboro police chief, who died Feb. 2 of cardiac arrest, hated the spotlight, according to his friend Dana Nimey-Olney. He hated having his picture taken, to the point it was a joke between us where I would make sure I got his picture, she said. So, other ones I ve snuck of him over the years, while he was working or whatever, are the pictures that we have. Nimey-Olney, the village historian and a former village clerk, said she first met Buley when he was 23 years old and starting part-time as a police officer in Whitesboro. It was his first and only department he would serve in.

Rome NY Community Advisory Committee submits draft police reform plan

A committee has released the first draft of proposed reforms for the Rome Police Department. The city of Rome’s Community Advisory Committee published the 100-page draft proposal last Monday, as part of a statewide executive order from Gov. Andrew Cuomo that municipalities submit reform plans by April 1 or lose funding. Recommended actions from the 14-member committee made up of police, local religious and business leaders and other community members include introducing body-worn cameras, further work on crisis intervention and increasing diversity in recruitment specifically among Spanish-speaking individuals. Rome police Chief Kevin Beach said the draft was put together over the last couple months following meetings among committee members. It will be available for both the public and city common council to review before it is passed as a resolution, he said.
