Stevens Point: RoboCop statue honoring Peter Weller could come to city

STEVENS POINT – A tribute to the RoboCop film franchise could be coming to Stevens Point. A statue of the iconic character was created in Detroit, where the movie takes place. A grassroots crowdfunding effort for the statue began in 2011 and raised about $67,000, according to the Detroit Free Press. Now, after nearly a decade, the statue is complete. But when the planned location for the statue at Detroit s Michigan Science Center fell through, the statue had nowhere to go. Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza stepped in to volunteer the city as its new home. The statue would hold special meaning for the city. RoboCop himself, actor Peter Weller, is a Stevens Point native. Weller starred in RoboCop in 1987 and RoboCop 2 in 1990.
