Local authors: A love of lighthouses leads to a 700-mile journey to get the story

In the summer of '82, McDowell and Caren, his high school sweetheart and wife of one year, set out to bicycle 700 miles along the West Coast, from Eugene to San Francisco. A highlight of the trip was the hope and then the promise of meeting retired lighthouse keeper Bill Owens.
