[applause] the president wrapping up what has been a day long remembrance of the 9/11 ten years later continuing with a concert for hope tonight at john f. kennedy concert hall. the president and first lady ending this day with a ceremony that we understand is a collection of poetry readings, reflections and musical performances intended to offer a sense of renewal and on the bill tonight, patti labelle, alan jackson, country singer and many others the president making a point tonight to say that these past ten years have known that america does not give in to fear and gave great credit he says to president george w. bush for saying that the u.s. will never wage war against slam or any other religion. he spoke for about ten or nine minutes which was on the schedule and we understand the ceremony has in mind the victims of 9/11 and families and friends and first responders and members of our military who died serves in iraq and afghanistan and
there? what kind of did you think it is important for presidents to hold these events? to have cultural events at the white house? what would you envision for the right way to do this kind of event? it is important for events within the white house to reflect that decency, patriotism that is america. remember laura bush tried to have one of these poetry readings in the white house. she invited poets and actors and actresses, those who would repeat the lines of the historians and the well-known poets throughout the years. she had to cancel because some left wing protesters disagreed what she want odd to reflect and who she wanted to invite. i remember there being the controversy that the rapper common brought to the table. i guess it is going to be everybody s interpretation what is appropriate and what isn t. my opinion, the white house could have done better on this one. inviting those who reflect
think. you have to do it because you have your back to the wall. now what? sink or swim. well, i don t swim very well, but i treaded a lot of water. it has been operating in this tiny basement since it was started by lorraine s husband, max gordon. 75 years ago. he opened this club in 1935. it was not a jazz club then. it was the same room, but it did not jazz, it was poetry readings. i attribute the village vanguard s success to max gordon who ran this club for many, many decades and had a great horse sense about him. this was max s office, and there is a picture of max sitting here in the spot. this is the same terrible desk and i dare not get rid of it. my father max set down very strong roots. these days deborah gordon helps her mother run the club
