Patchwork of speeds proposed to make New Plymouth safer

The review follows new speed management guidelines issued by the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency in 2016. “Ten or twenty kilometres per hour can be the difference between serious injury and getting home on time,” David Langford, NPDC group manager planning and infrastructure, said in a statement. Council figures for 2019 showed six deaths on district highways, two of which took place on roads under NPDC control. There were also 49 serious accidents – including 34 on local roads – and 197 minor crashes, 34 of which were on routes under NPDC management. “Before we draw up any formal proposals for speed limit changes, we want to hear what locals think,” Langford added.
