decided, the united states has decided not to be directly involved. i think history will tell whether that was the right decision. clearly politics at home and politics abroad suggest that the concentration of nato is on defending nato territory and not ukraine. that doesn t mean we can t do much more to help the ukrainians and indeed the u.s. is sending much more equipment, and now we even the german government sending stinger missiles and anti-tank weapons in order to help the ukrainians defend themselves. they certainly have a right to defend themselves, and we ought to help them as best we can. how significant is it that germany will send weapons to ukraine? i think it s very significant. germany under its own laws doesn t allow the shipment of armaments to nations in conflict. and it was one of the reasons it refused for so long to provide lethal aid to ukraine back in
inflict financial pain without causing a backlash, but there will be some i m certain of some increase in prices. you ll see. well, thousands of ukrainians are trying to cross the borders desperately right now to get to safety. our erin burnett was with some of them, and wait until you hear what she witnessed. you re in the cnn newsroom. out here, you re more than just a landowner. you re a gardener. landscaper. you a hunter.ener. because you didn t settle for ordinary. same goes for your equipment. versatile, powerful, durable kubota equipment. more goes into it. so you get more out of it.
2014 and 15. when russia first invaded ukraine the germans led the effort to prevent delivery of even defensive lethal equipment. they ve now turned 180 degrees. they re ready to help the ukrainians with significant capabilities that are going to help the ukrainians extend these tanks we were just seeing and make sure they don t reach their target. of course following the decision to halt the nord stream 2 pipeline to russia as well. how much of the calculation do you think by nato countries to not put boots on the ground in ukraine, how much of the calculation is due to the fact that russia is a nuclear power that has significant capabilities on that front and on the cyber front and many other ways? yeah, i think you have to be realistic. who is it that you are countering? and when it comes to russia, the
what they re doing right now. they re determined to stand for their land. and you re seeing that determination. i mean the russian assault has been slower moving based on what intelligence assessments were predicting in large part because the ukrainians have showed so much defiance. of course it is a much smaller military than the russian military, but you re not only seeing civilians picking up arms, you re seeing, you know, just average people trying to join this fight. you re seeing ukrainians stand in front of russian tanks to try to to keep them from invading. tell us more about the patriotism, the patriotic spirit because i just think people all around the world are just struck by that and struck by the president there, president zelenskyy who refuses to leave the capital. you know like i said before what i witnessed in ukraine the first person who died there he
was armenian who was speaking fluently in ukrainian and was determined to stand for this land. again even there is to stand for the land where they live and their home. i think today we ve seen supporting this, supporting ukraine. everyone is understanding this can happen anywhere in the world if you allow somebody to come and instead of knocking on your door enter without permission and try to take your home. and i think for ukrainians that was their land, and they will be standing like they standed the cold winter of 2013, 14, they ll be standing right now in front of tanks. and i will tell you something it was also during midan when people were standing in front of the armory of police.
