that some of these cuts are coming from the most vulnerable in america. you were one of 28 republicans who thought john boehner was wrong in accepting this deal. why was he wrong? i understand that nobody gets everything they want, but i signed a pledge to america. that pledge said we would bring spending levels back to 2008 levels and we had to cut $100 million from our federal budget. i have in my hand this penny. we cut barely a penny. we have a major debt problem in our country. we re $1.6 trillion in deficit this year. we went from an $8.67 trillion debt to over $14 trillion in the last 48 months, a 60% rise in our debt. to me that means we have to cut spending. the $38 billion just wasn t enough. you understand what would have happened if your position would have prevailed, how many millions of meamericans would b suffering including family members of the u.s. military who
we re doing business in washington, d.c. we re not here to perpetuate the status quo because it s not working. the cuts are important because we need to be on a trajectory to actually maintain the fiscal sanity that is in this country. we want to restrain the explosive growth of bureaucracy achieving a 10% reduction over the next three years in the federal workforce through attrition. coupled with a true pay freeze for the next five years and reform to government workers generous benefit program. we want to end the corporate welfare and perpendicular nant bailout of dodd/frank. we want to take frannie and freddie off the backs of the taxpayers and targeting investment not having government pick winners and losers from washington, d.c. we re condominiumed commitment reforms. i think the american people will be excited we re living up to the obligations we made in the pledge to america in bringing back this congress and bringing back the fiscal sanity that s so important to this country.
nothing. we continue to move forward with what we re unveiling today. you will hear from our budget chairman, a budget that does exactly that. grows jobs, creates a new energy policy, and shrinks the size of government while saving entitlements for the foo you tour and those who currently have it. that is a fundamental difference, that s the pledge to america, and that s what republicans continue to keep. morning. president gave us a budget about a month ago that doubles the debt by the end of his first term and triples it by the end of his budget. he punted on debt reduction. we re not going to do that. we think we owe it to our constituents, to our children and grandchildren, to give them a budget that pays off the national debt. to give them a budget that makes health and retirement security something that s real. we want to give them a budget that actually grows jobs and economic growth. this is a budget that creates economic growth, job creation. it s a budget to pay off our
spending, willing to cut a few hundred billion out of defense, yes or no? you may have forgotten we have this thing called the pledge to america. i ve read it. we included specific promises to the american people. this $61 billion in cuts represents us keeping a major promise of the pleblg dge to ama to the american people. i think keeping your prom sis important. i think finding budget cuts this year and making good on those promises is vitally important. this is nothing more than a down payment on fiscal discipline. the only way to change the fiscal direction of the federal government is to get serious about spending across the board. we look for savings in discretionary spending, even in defense spending, and we look to reform entitlements, and republicans are going to produce a budget that lays out a template for beginning the process of reforming entitlements and saving our nation from the sea of red ink. congressman, i ve been waiting for months to get the specifics on th
security and medicare. he won t give specifics until they have the budget for the next fiscal year. that has freedom fighters wondering if the gop is serious about curbing entitlement spending why wait until next year s budget to do something about it? joining me are fox business supporter and colleague chris carter and lynn para more and reads and magazine editor in chief matt welsh. do you think they are serious they have the political fortitude on craziness as the case may be to touch these sacred cows which are bankrupting us? no. but at least we have gone from a place from six months ago where in the pledge to america from republicans they didn t mention entitlements at all. they will improve the situation but specifically hands oven titlements. now we are seeing because of pressure from the tea party the general mood of the country is shiftling this is a first baby step. i don t think it will survive the house and political process.
