Margaret Jeanette Miller, 89, passed away Dec. 12, 2020, after a short illness.
Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020, at Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church, Kalona. Due to COVID, masks will be required. Family will not be present. A celebration of life service will be held at Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church at 11:30 a.m. on Dec. 19, 2020. Masks will be required. The service will be Livestreamed at the Beatty Peterseim Facebook Page.
A private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
Margaret was born in rural Wellman, Iowa, on Sept. 20, 1931, to Raymond G. Miller and Nettie C. Bender Miller. She lived virtually her entire life in the Kalona area, working at Strickler’s grocery store during high school, then graduating from Iowa Mennonite School (now Hillcrest Academy) in 1949. Margaret was a member of Upper Deer Creek Mennonite Church.
COVID-19 has had adverse effects on retirement and assisted living facilities across Iowa.
Among them is the isolation residents feel because the pandemic has forced facilities like Pleasantview Home in Kalona to limit or bar family visitation entirely. Pleasantview’s Renee Hershberger says activity directors like her have had to “step up their game” to help residents feel less isolated and keep their spirits up, “Well it actually takes it up a few notches. We do a lot of one-to-ones now. We always did them before but it’s more important now than ever because before they were quarantined to their rooms we could only do small group activities, so we spend a lot more one-on-one time, it’s more individualized. We get to do whatever the resident likes.”

The Washington County Supervisors meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 8 opened with the submission of an approximate 250-signature petition from Washington County nursing facilities asking the board to institute a county mask mandate immediately.
Presented during the public comment segment, the package given to the board contained the petitions as well as letters from the facilities’ administrators, including from Kalona’s Pleasantview Home, asking for help to protect the most vulnerable populations in the county.
The letters outline all precautions taken that include no outside visitors, keeping residents in their rooms, no communal dining, no group gatherings and no family visitors. Even with all precautions observed, there have been deaths at the facilities, the board was told.
