It’s been held in all weather conditions, with floats often making a stand against issues in the community, but the Pleasant Point Christmas Parade has been no match for Covid-19.

A large crowd gathered to watch the Pleasant Point Christmas Parade. The parade has gained notoriety for its “politically incorrect” comedy floats alongside the regular Christmas parade entries from local businesses, schools and community groups although Friday night s event seemed tamer than usual.

A float referencing the Speaker of the House Trevor Mallard using taxpayer money to settle a defamation lawsuit. Denton said she doesn’t think this reflects a change in the parade’s tone or that there are subjects people aren’t finding funny any more.

Denton has been on the parade committee for four years and was happy to take her turn.

At a previous Pleasant Point Christmas Parade marijuana was a hot topic. She has no plans to change anything as it was popular the way it was, she said. “It pretty much runs itself and has a good following and lots of support.” Floats just need to turn up to Matai St at 6.30pm to be included and Denton has no idea how many there will be, but she expects the themes will probably include Covid-19, Donald Trump, Winston Peters and live animal export.
