MALIBU, Calif., Jan. 13, 2021 /PRNewswire/ Plastic Oceans International announces the launch of
BlueCommunities, a global initiative that establishes collaborative partnerships with local communities and organizations, supporting projects that can inspire change worldwide.
With startup funding provided by
Howden Group Holdings, this new initiative launches in six communities: Alappuzah, India; Campeche, Mexico; Chiloe Island, Chile; Detroit, USA; Easter Island (part of Chile); and Durban, South Africa - with Santa Marta, Colombia, and Douala, Cameroon, coming on board around February 1.

Researchers have discovered microplastics in human placentas for the first time, shedding new light on the level of human exposure to such materials and giving rise to concern about its potential to interfere with fetal development.
The study, published this month in the journal Environment International, found particles in the placentas of four healthy women who had normal pregnancies and births in Italy. The microplastics were detected on both the fetal and maternal sides of the placenta, as well as in the membranes that surround and protect the fetus.

Food companies and manufacturers may soon have a viable answer to the problem of single-use plastics with the introdcuction of a new green paper technology, according to J&J Green Paper, a Miami start-up. J&J Green Paper’s technology, Janus, provides coated paper that can be custom-shaped and creates moisture resistance equivalent to petroleum-coated products. The paper is recyclable, compostable and made with zero petroleum additives, making it safe for composting with no chemical footprint.
In addition to enabling production of fully compostable and environmentally friendly food packaging products, the technology will allow for an alternative to wasteful K-cup coffee pods.
