Amarillo city officials hosted a news conference regarding the election recount process after a petition for recount from the May 1 mayoral race was certified Thursday.
According to previous Globe-News reports, city officials confirmed earlier this week that mayoral candidate Claudette Smith submitted a recount petition for Saturday’s election. City Manager Jared Miller said the completed application, along with a $4,500 deposit, was submitted Wednesday and certified Thursday.
In unofficial combined election results from Potter and Randall counties, incumbent Ginger Nelson garnered 54% of the total with 10,922 combined votes. Smith, who got the second most votes in the race, was reported as getting 29% of the vote, with 5,861 combined votes. To trigger a runoff election, which would be held June 5, Nelson would have to lose 816 votes through the recount.

Word has come down that a petition for a recount has been received in the race for Mayor of Amarillo.
The race pitted incumbent Ginger Nelson against Claudette Smith, Michael Hunt and Carl Karas. The results of the May 1st election were overwhelmingly in the favor of Mayor Nelson, who took 54% of the vote.
