No one can point to a date certain for the birthday of pizza. It seems likely that pizzas developed over a long period of time. Flatbreads have existed in Mediterranean cultures for hundreds of years, with various sauces being slathered across them to satisfy hunger of the masses.
But pizzas as we know them today seem to have originated in southern Italy. The flatbread became a base for cheese, tomatoes, and basil. It is said that the colors of the ingredients reflected those of the Italian flag.
