Pittsylvania County Bookmobile guru retires after 28-year tenure

CHATHAM, Va. — Beloved Pittsylvania County Public Library Outreach Coordinator and Bookmobile guru Myrna Herndon enjoyed a socially-distanced cupcake party Feb. 1 as she celebrated her last day after 28 years of service. Herndon s lifework, the Pittsylvania County Public Library Bookmobile, dates back almost as far as the library s debut in 1939. The first Bookmobile was a loan provided as part of the Works Progress Administration in 1940 and was already so beloved that when the WPA tried to recall the vehicle in 1943, the library purchased it, said Lisa Tuite, library director. There have been many Bookmobiles in the years since, providing an essential service to many people and school children across the county who otherwise could not make use of the library.
