SRRIFA takes final steps toward Staunton River Plastics project

HURT, Va. — After more than a year since its announcement and multiple delays attributed to Covid-19 effects, “Project Emotion” − a moniker for the Staunton River Plastics (SRP) facility slated for construction at Southern Virginia Multimodal Park (SVMP) in Hurt − continues inching ever closer the eve of its groundbreaking.  The Staunton River Regional Industrial Facility Authority (SRRIFA) Board of Directors met May 25 in Chatham.  A sizable part of their agenda consisted of ratifying key documents leading up to commencement of actual site preparation and construction. Visionary eyes hotel in Chatham

CHATHAM, Va. — Exactly 25 miles separate the Red Carpet Inn & Suites in Danville from the Hampton Inn in Gretna. Local leaders recently referred to this stretch from North Danville nearly two-thirds of the way to the Campbell County line as a “hotel desert.” Soon, a 30,000-capacity amphitheater, the sprawl of a Caesar’s casino resort, the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex, two boarding schools of national recognition and other prominent features will all lie between these two lodging options. It begs the question: Why is the seat of Pittsylvania County still without a hotel? “We actually lose events because of that,” said John Harris, executive director of the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex in Chatham. “People make a decision on whether to have an event here or not based on hotel availability. I get plenty of events and I work plenty of deals, but I have lost events based on hotel availability.”
