Several years ago on an early morning drive through the Smokey Mountain National Park, my wife and I were startled to see a small bear rush across the road in front of us and disappear into the brush.
It moved faster and closer to the ground than any other bear we had seen in the area, but since their numbers in the park are dwindling we were just happy to have spotted one. Our excitement turned to disbelief later that day as we described our encounter to the park ranger. He informed us we had not seen a bear, but rather a wild hog. Large numbers of the animals are invading and causing extensive damage to certain areas of the park.
