Filmmakers plan to transform huge Wroughton Airfield hangar into studios

Filmmakers with a background in Hollywood blockbusters want to turn a huge airfield hangar into a soundstage studio. Screenwriter and director Sean Robinson – whose credits include smash-hit movies such as Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and Mel Gibson’s Hamlet – has joined forces with producer Tyrone Edwards to form Dignus Films. The new company has now applied to Swindon Borough Council for permission to transform a 55,000 sq ft building at Wroughton Airfield into a centre of film production. They say ten feature-length films would be shot there over the course of 12 years. The hangar on the eastern side of the airfield – near the Swindon Karting hangar – is owned by the Science Museum Group and is approved for storage purposes. But the museum is a joint-applicant with Dignus Films and it agrees there is no realistic prospect of the hangar being used for storage.
