welcome back to morning joe. we talked a little bit at the masters at the top of the show. let s show you what happened on the course yesterday. the first round at the augusta national golf club, tiger woods the center of attention as he usually is as he began his chase for a fifth green jacket just a couple of weeks after getting his first win on tour in more than two years. sinking this putt for birdie on the par 4, 3rd. down the stretch, bogeyed 17. then here on 18, didn t get much better from there. bad tee shot. then out of the pine straw, it rolls into the crowd. that s his third shot. he d have to tap in for bogey. tiger finished even par, tied for 29th place after the first round. not alone in the struggles. phil mickelson had a terrible day. on 10, slices it off the fairway. going to need a little help
woods finds the trees off the tee on 18 and it didn t get much better from there. woods gets it out of the rough. but rolls it into the crowd here. that s out of the pine straw on his third shot, kind of traversing the fairway, tapped in for birdie and finished even par tied for 19th place. not alone, phil mickelson had a rough day. on 10, slices it off the fairway. he s going to need help finding that ball. mickelson took a double bogey, finished 2 over. lee westwood making the putt for birdie on 17. had seven birdies, finished the day 5 under. the most interesting round of the day, though, belongs to henrik stenson, the swede playing on his 36th birthday and this was a terrible birthday. he led the field at 5 under as he got to the final hole. looked like it was going to be a great birthday but everything unraveled. frustrated with his third shot
sometimes when we see a large fire, especially a forest fire, we can actually see it on radar. doppler radar looks for things in the air, raindrops. if it bounces back in the smoke plume, it can see the smoke plume as well. it was so evident yesterday, right here from that little spot i have marked as a hot spot, all of the smoke blowing offshore. right just a little bit south of what would be new smyrna beach. today? no smoke on the radar. we don t think they re out because really florida is only saying 25% contained. but an inch to half an inch to rain, plus or minus, in that area overnight really helped. the flames were amazing where the trees tops were on fire. a lot of times you ll see a fire and it will burn the pine straw, below the trees. the tops, the crown on fire this time t. was a very large event. you take a look at that, how dry it s been in florida and you
that bad. phil mickelson on the 12th hole, draining a birdie putt. this is the shot. from the pine straw, between the trees, over the water. you have to lay up here, right? no. that s just an unbelievable, impossible 6 iron best shot i ve seen at the masters. on the 18th hole. he didn t feed this. already had a lead. drans the birdie. finishes 16 under par. a huge margin. then he walks off the 18th green where he meets his wife, amy, as we ve been talking about. she was diagnosed with cancer 11 months ago. has had a tough fight. been bed-ridden all week in augusta. made it out for the last day. mickelson s third masters title, the most significant of all of them because of the year he and his family have had. to have her here and share this moment and share the joy of winning on 18 and just share this with my kids, is something
