Nobody needs to tell Granit Xhaka, that bearded fan who took his top off during the shootout and became a meme or the French squad’s feuding families, but things going Swiss is very much on trend in European football.
“I think there’s a good chance that everything is going Swiss well, all UEFA competitions, anyway,” says Omar Chaudhuri.
“If you think about the current format teams playing each other in closed groups that’s been around for nearly 100 years. Maybe there is a better way now.
“The strength of the Swiss model is it’s a hybrid between a league format, which is the best way to find the best team, and a cup format, which provides jeopardy.”
