U.K. COVID variant detected across U.S. as nation races to distribute vaccine David Begnaud © / Getty Images Pilot Vaccination Program Begins In Nevada s Populous Clark County As the U.S. marks the deaths of more than 400,000 Americans from COVID-19, the U.K. variant has been detected in at least 20 states. Health officials are trying to stay ahead of the virus by vaccinating as many people as possible but it hasn t been easy.  The U.K. variant appears to be 50% more contagious than other strains. Dr. Michael Osterholm, a member of President-elect Joe Biden s COVID-19 Advisory Board, told CBS News that it s not yet clear how vaccines will work with new mutations of the virus.
