crash, french officials saying the black box is dajds but hope to make the necessary repairs so it can be usable. i want to go to a former ntsb investigator greg feith and jay rollins. gentlemen, thanks for being with me. greg, one of my viewers was asking via twitter why in 2016 do we not have video flight recorders in the cockpit or other parts of the plane? that question has been going on a long time jose. one of the big issues is privacy. a lot of pilot unions have been against video cockpit recorders, only because of privacy issues. there s technology out there where we can capture the video at least being presented on the electronic flight displays but that s an on-going issue and question that investigators had in the past as well why do i
recommendations about video recording in the cockpit. they do not have that. they do not. a lot of people think they should have that. pilot unions don t want that recording. rugged terrain has made it very difficult for search recovery teams to reach the crash site in the french alps. bad weather is making the situation even worse. let s go to meteorologist jennifer gray for an update of what is going on over there. the terrain itself is going to be the most challenging aspect of this. you literally have to hike in to where the crash site is. add to that the nasty weather that is there as we speak. we know when the plane took off, the weather was okay but then after it crashed, that s when we start to see the bad weather move in. we re looking at rain and we re looking at even snow in the higher elevations and depending on the exact elevation of where the crash site is they could actually pick up a little bit of
aviation. we need to lead now. you agree, tom? absolutely, yes. but you understand the domestic bureaucracy and international bureaucracy, the flicks of this, the various interest, business interests, the plane manufacturers, the airline companies, the pilot unions and all of that, is it doable? it s difficult. you mentioned why. because of all of the disparities? contactually. you think anything will be done out of this or more experience five years from now where a plane will simply disappear? no, it s outrageous. there is public pressure on this and i think that should be translated closely to political pressure. there should be political actions, too. i think it s a very good idea for the united states to take the lead on this because in every technical sense the united states is the leader in aviation, it has authority, technology, and it has the potential voice to do it. and it s no good waiting for
