A decade after installing MoorMaster™ automated vacuum mooring at an iron ore berth in Western Australia, Pilbara Ports Authority has now selected Cavotec to secure availability and extend lifetime of its mooring system.
After a steady growth in annualized portfolio value of service contracts in 2020, Cavotec has continued to book a number of new contracts in the first quarter of 2021, one of them is with the Pilbara Ports Authority.
Cavotec will maintain and upgrade the MoorMaster system over the coming four years. The modular design of MoorMaster systems allows Pilbara Ports Authority to continue using the system even as one unit at a time is serviced, thereby maximizing availability.
Iron ore exports to China through Port Hedland in the first four months of 2021 are now well behind the level for the same period of 2020, despite last year seeing a hit from the pandemic and a rebound in Chinese crude steel production so far this year.
Exports through the world’s biggest iron ore port to the world’s biggest market fell 7.5% in the January-February period of this year from the first four (Covid-hit) months of 2020.
That’s despite a 3.6% rise in total iron ore exports from Port Hedland so far in 2021 compared to same period of 2020.
News of the shortfall would normally help maintain upward pressure on iron ore prices, but this time the news came as prices were in the middle of a major shakeout that saw them slide 13% on Friday (See separate story).

One of Port of Port Hedland’s first shipping berths, Berth 3 is getting a major upgrade as part of the State Government’s WA Recovery Plan, with works commencing to remediate the rock wall and to refurbish the wharf piles.
The $11.4 million contract has been awarded to WA company Total AMS Pty Ltd (TAMS), with the works forming part of the $20 million project to upgrade Port Hedland’s Inner Harbour retaining and sea walls.
Berth 3 at the Port of Port Hedland is a common user berth, used primarily for the export of salt and import of fuels and general cargo. The berth was constructed in the 1960s and this will be the first time the rock wall remediation has been conducted.
