More than 2,000 people have now evacuated from three Northwestern Ontario First Nations as forest fires menace their communities.
Fires threatening Poplar Hill, Deer Lake, and Pikangikum First Nations hadn’t moved significantly closer to the communities, reported Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) on Friday.
“We’ve seen some slightly less extreme fire behaviour in the north of the Red Lake District over the last couple of days, which has kept those fires reasonably stationary,” said fire information officer Chris Marchand. “They’re still growing in size, but not at a rate that’s too alarming.”
