Despite warnings by healthcare leaders about the dangers, the impact of Christmas gatherings is beginning to take its toll in Clay County, Arkansas and the nation. Yesterday, three more deaths were reported in the county, adding to the two who were reported last week. The numbers of positive cases also continue to climb, as facilities are being pushed to their limits with COVID-19 related cases.
Statewide in Arkansas on Monday, the total number of cases climbed to 234,781, up 1,306 from the previous day and an increase of over 18,000 in the past week. By Wednesday afternoon the number ballooned to 242,593, up 3,705 in just a day. Of those reported on Wednesday, 25,092 were still considered active, up 684 in the past 24 hours.. The death toll also continues to climb, as 65 additional deaths were reported on Wednesday, bringing the statewide total to 3,901.

As the nation s healthcare workers brace themselves for a projected Christmas spike in COVID-19 cases, the numbers have stabilized somewhat in Northeast Arkansas the past week while other areas saw record numbers. Here in Clay County the rolling 14-day positivity rate was just over 14-percent, while the death toll climbed to 30 over the holiday weekend.
Although millions of doses of the two new vaccines have been administered the past two weeks, the increase in travel for the Christmas holiday is expected to push facilities to their limits. Statewide, the numbers have continued to climb steadily as the death toll has now eclipsed 3,600.

Piggott Community Hospital medical director Dr. J.T. Dewitt received the first COVID-19 vaccine in Clay County, as the initial batch was delivered on Wednesday morning. Administering the dose is Shelly Samples, RN, who coordinates issues with infectious diseases along with serving as the trauma program director at the local hospital.

The arrival comes as the virus continues to run rampant in the country, state and region and as Arkansas sets a new one-day record for deaths at 58 on Wednesday. In the past several days the impact of the expected Thanksgiving Spike are being felt, although the number of those hospitalized has stabilized. The first shipments of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine were distributed last week, with Piggott Community Hospital getting 80 doses in their initial shipment. This week the first of the Moderna vaccine is being shipped across the nation. The new vaccines come on the scene as the virus continues to run rampant in the country, state and region and as Arkansas continues to see dozens of deaths each day. In the past several days the impact of the expected Thanksgiving Spike are being felt, although the number of those hospitalized has stabilized. Four additional deaths have also been reported in Clay County since last week, raising the toll to 28.
